Cynthia Null

Course Name: Human Factors: Learning from the Past and Looking to the Future with Cynthia Null and Colleagues
Course Number: 08-HF02
Date/Time: 6/11/2008 to 6/12/2008
Location: National Institute of Aerospace
Bio: Cynthia Null

Course Overview:

As the NESC Academy enters its third year, it is pleased to announce an encore delivery of Human Factors presented by Dr. Cynthia Null, NASA Technical Fellow, on June 11 and 12 in Hampton, VA. Dr. Nulls expertise in human factors bridges academia and aerospace. She began her career as a psychology professor at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where she taught for 18 years, then joined NASA as a branch chief in the Human Factors Research Division. She has served NASA as Aviation Operation Systems program manager and as deputy manager of both the Space Human Factors Engineering Project and the Aviation Safety Program. She currently teaches human-centered design for aerospace engineers at Stanford University.

Dr. Null will be joined by several human factors experts to explore human factors in a systems engineering context. The focus of this class will be integrating human factors into NASA missions from conception through operations. The course will include detailed case studies and problem-solving activities on the following topics:

  • Developing in-space systems.
  • Procedure development.
  • Maintenance and manufacturing.
  • Control center design.
  • Ground operations.

This 2-day course will include such topics as human factors as an engineering discipline, setting requirements, designing to match human capabilities, and evaluation tools and methods.

Human Factors was the fifth classroom course presented by the NESC Academy in December 2006 and was well received by students. "The presenter had a lot of good tools/tests that we can take back to use to test cognition. Very interesting also!" was one student comment. Another wrote, "I like how it felt all at once like a consortium and a training—a meeting of the minds, and gathering of various experience, a sharing of knowledge as well as a baseline training."

Only U.S. citizens may attend this course.
